Things to Do in Houston

Houston, we have liftoff. Not only is Houston HQ for NASA Mission Control and the home of the Johnson Space Center, but it’s also America’s fourth biggest city (after NYC, LA, and Chicago). Houston’s innovative mindset has made it an urban oasis of opportunity for people from all over, with the greater metro area being one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse places in the country. This cosmopolitan hodgepodge gives Houston a stunning array of food, art, business, and things to do. It’s also the birthplace of Beyonce’. Need any more convincing? Here are our best bets for things to do in Houston, Texas.

Original Ninfa’s

This top-notch Texmex spot gained national notoriety when it allegedly sparked the ‘National Fajita Craze’. Though it’s not clear when that craze exactly started or really ended (everyone still loves fajitas), there does seem to be solid evidence that Ninfa’s advocated early on for this ubiquitous dish, then called ‘tacos al carbon’. Though the legendary Mama Ninfa passed away in 2005, she lives on through her recipes and in spirit through the countless hungry pilgrims who make the trip to her original kitchen.

  • The Houston Zoo
  • The Children’s Museum Houston
  • Houston Center for Photography
  • Buffalo Soldiers National Museum
  • The Health Museum

The Museum Park is perfect for families and beautiful year-round.

Houston Heights

This northwest neighborhood in Houston has a long history as a cultural hotspot filled with funky restaurants, unique antique shops, and small, independent boutiques. “The Heights” is an excellent spot to experience authentic Houston, with great venues for live music and plenty of outdoor patios on which to grab a meal or a cold drink. Houston Heights is home to an oddity museum called “The Art Car Museum” and also by its nickname “The Garage Mahal”.

CorkScrew BBQ

No Texas list is complete without some smoky, savory Texas BBQ. Corkscrew serves up no-frills, authentic Brisket sandwiches and classic BBQ sides like potato salad, coleslaw, mac-n-cheese, and more. Customer reviews rave about the pork ribs, smoked Brisket, and sauce, with some calling it “a religious experience” and “the best bbq in Texas”.
