Baltimore's Best Public & Airport Transportation

Baltimore is a historic city that attracts travelers from around the country and the world. While its public transit system isn’t as robust as other cities, options still exist and there are multiple ways to get between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and your accommodations.

Baltimore Airport Transportation Options

You’ll have plenty of options for getting to and from BWI:

Public transportation: There are multiple public transportation options between the airport, the city, and the surrounding areas. The airport offers a free shuttle service to and from the Amtrak and the MARC commuter rail service. There is a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Light Rail station at the airport, and the MTA #201 bus has a stop in the Gaithersburg Park and Ride lot.

Taxis and Ride Share: Ride share services, such as Uber and Lyft, meet and drop off their customers on the departures level. Cabs, on the other hand, pick up fares between doors 5 and 13 on the lower level, near the baggage claim area.

Shuttles: Hotels, rental car companies and off-site parking garages operate complimentary shuttles to and from the airport. Check with the business to verify the “zone” outside the airport where you’ll meet your shuttle.

Alternate Methods of Transportation in Baltimore

After you get into the city and are settled at your destination, you’ll want to start exploring. Fortunately, Baltimore has a public transportation system that operates throughout the city and can connect you to the surrounding area. An alternative is to consider car sharing, which allows you to rent a car from a Baltimore local.

Baltimore Light Rail and Bus Service

The MTA operates a range of transit services, including buses, light rail, and commuter trains. Fares vary by mode of travel, but daily, weekly, and monthly passes are available. Day passes start at $4.40, per person, per day.
